Is Wordpress or Squarespace easier for page layouts?

In the next of my Wordpress vs Squarespace comparison series, we learn which online platform is easier for non-technical people to use when making pages.

People often ask me whether Wordpress or Squarespace is better. The answer is "it depends", and I'll include some resources at the end of this post in case you want to examine the pros & cons of Wordpress & Squarespace and more. But when it comes to making attractive page layouts, the fastest, easiest tool is Squarespace. But don't take my word for it: I'll show you right now. In the following videos, you can watch me build the same exact page layout in each of these systems, so you can see for yourself in real time exactly the steps you'd need to follow and how complicated (or not) it is to do. My example is a 3 column layout that includes text, image and button - something that's fairly common for people to want on their websites.

With Squarespace, it doesn't really matter which template you use, as the way you build pages is exactly the same no matter what your template looks like. That's because all Squarespace templates are provided by Squarespace, and you edit all of your pages and blog posts using the same tool (called LayoutEngine).

With Wordpress, the tool you use to create your page layout will vary depending on which Wordpress theme you use. If you're using a basic theme, you will only have the standard Wordpress editor to work with. And that's a very limiting and confusing thing to use when trying to build multi-column layouts. It's like using a Swiss army knife to saw through a log. Yes, you can do it, but it's going to take a while and probably frustrate the heck out of you. You could also install a 3rd-party plugin (or five) to make creating layouts easier, but these days many premium (paid) themes include these types of plugins bundled up with the theme. As it's so common, this is the approach I use in my video. My demonstration uses the Avada theme, which is the single biggest selling Wordpress theme of the last 3 years.

Have a look a these videos, and let me know in the comments which system you'd rather use to create your web pages:
